Today, September 22, 2020 is the first day of Autumn in the northern hemisphere (the first day of Spring in the southern) and with every changing of the season, we welcome in a new cardinal zodiac season. The Autumn Equinox begins Libra season! Those who honor the Pagan/Wiccan sabbats also today “Mabon.”

Welcome welcome to the first day of fall! I absolutely love the energy of fall. Perhaps because I am a Libra rising and a Scorpio moon (the fall zodiacal seasons), but the changing of the leaves, the crispness in the air, and the desire to snuggle up with a mulled beverage or a pumpkin flavored treat makes my little witchy heart sing! No matter how you invoke the changing of this season or what you call it, take an opportunity to reflect on the value of change and the cycles of life.

Let’s talk about Libra season first: Libra is a Cardinal Air sign which means it loves to initiate things, and the air quality makes it a great communicator, thinker, and intellectual. Libra is associated with the scales - balance - and with Libra season we are called to step into greater balance in all areas of life. This is symbolically represented by the concept of the equinox: the daylight is in equal balance to the night. And we honor the balance between light and dark as the sign of Libra, too, honors this dichotomy. Libra is the truth seeker, but takes its time in search of this truth, carefully weighing each side in order to obtain all the details, gain clarity on all the possible perspectives, and seek the best of both sides. While Libra’s delivery may be soft and passive, its diplomacy is what makes Libra a great judge, mediator, problem-solver, friend, and lover. Libra is a partner-oriented sign and places great value on the relationships and connections it forms. It sees its relationships as a mirror to itself and what it has to offer and seeks an even give-and-take - a healthy balance in any dynamic. Ruled by Venus, Libra cherishes not only love but pleasure, beauty, aesthetic, and art. For Libra to thrive and shine, it must feel like the aesthetic vibe of itself, home, and surroundings reflect a peaceful, serene, and pleasantly powerful yet harmonious statement. While Libra is not organized quite like a Virgo, it desires order and a sense of flow to maintain happiness and fulfillment. Virgo-Libra season is a great time to create order out of chaos and find aesthetically pleasing upgrades to areas of life. Some may thrive in chaos, but Libra would prefer not to. If you’re feeling out of alignment, try tiding up your space or bringing more balance into what you eat and drink, how you allocate your time, or how you spend your money.

Libra, Venus, and the abundance of Mabon

As we transition from Libra to talking about the kicking off of autumn set in place by the Mabon celebration, I’d like the bridge to be Venus. Specifically the tarot card, The Empress. The Empress is associated with the sign of Venus because of her ability to cultivate abundance and fruitfulness. The Divine Feminine Creator, The Empress speaks of having gifts, offerings, blessings - all that she’s ever wanted and needed - and knows exactly how to express gratitude to not only give back but to bring back to her a continue flow of bounty. She gives and she receives. She creates, and she accepts, and is secure in these areas. This is highly Libran, and very much tied to the celebration of Mabon. Keep reading.

Pagan Sabbat Mabon is celebrated around the first day of fall AKA the autumn equinox and is an honoring of balance, blessings, abundance, and the cycles of life. As days grow shorter and nights grow longer, the air gets colder and mother nature adjusts. The bounty of summer has seen its second harvest (the first being Lammas in early August), and just as a cornucopia holds fruits of labor and harvest, Mabon holds a special meaning as it relates to enjoying the fruits of our own hard work. Around this time, take a moment to reflect on all the hard work you’ve put in and what you’ve done to cultivate the blessings and bounty that surrounds you. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or excessive for you to appreciate it. And as the leaves change colors, sprinkle your home with warm colors like yellow, orange, red, and gold to bring the seasons and cycles into your home. Take a walk in nature, breathing in the crisp air and thanking the sun for the warmth and vitality it has brought the earth over the summer months. Find little trinkets and tokens of the first signs of fall to decorate your abode like leaves, acorns, apples, pumpkins and other gourds.

As we watch mother nature prepare for the chill, we are reminded that life also brings us cycles that allows us to regenerate. Things must die off and fall away for us to welcome in new growth: this is what the sabbats honor. As living beings, we go through cycles. And without these cycles, we would continuously remain the same - void of growth, new opportunity, and continual abundance. And as we inspect our own abundance, we feel the chill taking over the air. Now we begin to invest in insulation - doing what we need to do to provide ourselves sanctuary from harsh winter months, hunkering down to remain plentiful, protected, and warm. There is a time to expand, and there is a time to retreat. Honor each part in the cycles of life.
